A Time for Heroes
Date Fri 21st Sep 2018 to Sat 22nd Sep 2018
Holst wrote the terrifying first movement of The Planets in 1914, as Europe stood on the brink of war. ‘Mars’ rolls over the landscape like a tank – who can stand against it?

In 1944, as World War II dragged on, a Shakespeare film adaptation was commissioned from Laurence Olivier to boost British morale. Olivier’s portrayal of an idealised Henry V – inspiring outnumbered troops and leading them to victory – was enhanced by a magnificent orchestral soundtrack from William Walton.

But all heroes are flawed. Beethoven wrote his Third Symphony as a tribute to Napoleon – until Napoleon proclaimed himself emperor, whereupon Beethoven scrubbed out the title page in disgust. He dedicated his heroic, victorious symphony “to the memory of a great man”.

Faith Healer
Date Wed 26th Sep 2018 to Sat 13th Oct 2018
A BELVOIR PRODUCTION PRESENTED BY STATE THEATRE COMPANY.

BY BRIAN FRIEL

The Fantastic Francis Hardy: charming charlatan and showman or intermittently-gifted miracle worker?

Accompanied by his wife (or maybe mistress) Grace, and ex-vaudevillian manager Teddy, Francis travels the fading towns of Ireland, Scotland and Wales, scratching out a living curing the ill, strengthening the weak and liberating the doomed of their hope.

Wrestling with faith, memory and truth, Faith Healer is a story of the ties that bind us together, sometimes to our detriment.

The career defining masterpiece of the incomparable Irish great Brian Friel (Dancing at Lughnasa, Translations) the play sings with wit and tragedy as Francis, Grace and Teddy’s versions of their shared history slowly intertwine. Faith Healer comes to Adelaide in a highly awarded, hit production from director Judy Davis starring the exceptional Colin Friels, Alison Whyte and Paul Blackwell.

Join us for a mesmerising night in the theatre. You might just leave a believer.

Love and War
Date Fri 28th Sep 2018 to Sat 29th Sep 2018
You know you’re alive when you hear Chopin – the way he makes the piano sing, the tenderness of a nocturne, the bravura of a mazurka – and it’s all there in the F minor Concerto, first performed by the composer when he was barely twenty. Outstanding young pianist Benjamin Grosvenor will breathe life of his own into this music.

Shostakovich wrote his Eighth Symphony in 1943, following Russia’s victory at Stalingrad. A triumphal work was anticipated, but Shostakovich could not ignore the terrible human cost of the war, nor the ongoing suffering under Stalin. A menacing shadow hangs over this symphonic journey – “a journey that yearns more for peace than for victory,” according to Mark Wigglesworth. And yet, through it all, and finally emerging in hushed C major, is life – beautiful, resilient life.
Meditation Philosophy Wisdom
Date Fri 28th Sep 2018
With revered Tibetan lama His Eminence the 7th Dzogchen Rinpoche, Jigme Losel Wangpo

Do you know what your true purpose is?

Many of us live our lives without asking ourselves what the real purpose of it is. We just keep going day in day out, following our routines and habits, attending to our families and children and work to provide for all that we accumulate. All of this keeps us so busy that we completely miss our purpose without even knowing it.

On a subtler level we are driven by our desire for success, power or recognition believing this is the purpose, or we try to maximise our comfort, safety, health, and happiness with pleasure being our main goal. However, even if we achieve this temporarily, we can never be sure to have it forever.

In this Public Talk, drawing on the Dzogchen Teachings, Dzogchen Rinpoche will point out that by recognising and following the real purpose of our lives, we will not only lead a truly meaningful and valuable life, we can also rest in everlasting happiness.

Concours d'Lemons Down Under
Date Sat 29th Sep 2018
    FREE ENTRY FOR EVERYONE ***
It's the world's worst car show, or more correctly a show of the world's worst cars, and despite all efforts, it’s slipped past our border security and immigration controls, and is heading to Adelaide, South Australia for a second time in 2018!

This much talked about event (not in a good way), is back bigger and better, and in a new city centre location!

Concours d’Lemons, certainly lives up to its slogan of “celebrating the oddball, mundane and truly awful of the automotive world”, and even goes so far as to thumb its nose at conventional shows by openly encouraging the bribing of its celebrity judges.

Open to vehicles of all types, the Adelaide public will be subjected to some zany examples of questionable engineering and roadworthiness, as owners fall all over each other to win $2 recycled trophies in categories such as “Needlessly Complex Italian”, “Rueful Britannia”, and “Der Self-SatisfiedKrauttenWagen” to name but a few.

The low-point of the day, will be the public humiliation of the winner of the “Worst of Show” award, presented by our zany host, American journo, Alan Galbraith!
Billetproof Down Under

For our first event outside the USA, with the help of our partner, the National Motor Museum, we've been allowed to take over the Torrens Parade Grounds (right behind Government House), in the heart of downtown Adelaide.

The event will be sharing the grounds with it's sister event, Concours d'Lemons Down Under, an eclectic gathering of odd, wierd, rare and unusual vehicles, that under normal circumstances, wouldn't get a second glance!

On top of all this, there will be a whole bunch of other things to do, like free face painting, balloon artist and other entertainment for the kids, food vans, a display by Adelaide's own strongman Jordan "Biggie" Steffens, a traditional pinup contest and much, much more.

This fun family day is completely free to enter and attend, and is brought to you by Adelaide Cruisin Classics, Shannons Insurance and the History Trust of SA through the National Motor Museum.

Australian String Quartet presents SCHUBERT LEDGER SHOSTAKOVICH
Date Tue 9th Oct 2018
Works by two of the great quartet composers bookend this fascinating program. Schubert considered his thirteenth quartet to be a new beginning, where a command of dramatic expressiveness, gathered from his recent experiments in composing for plays and opera, infuses his natural lyrical gift with a new dimension of emotional and pictorial power.

Shostakovich wrote his tenth quartet at the idyllic spa resort of Dilizhan and the spirit of respite and communion with nature lends the work a rare sense of ease. But powerful feelings are by no means absent and in its wild twists of mood and pace, the quartet essays a rich journey towards emotional wisdom.

A contemporary flavour is added with an electric new work by James Ledger, now a leading figure among Australia’s composers, renowned for his ability to create striking imagery in musical form.

Sibelius Ablaze
Date Fri 12th Oct 2018 to Sat 13th Oct 2018
The final chords of Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony ring out into the silence, and it’s like you’re gliding at 10,000 feet. The whole symphony is one almighty surge upwards, following the flock of swans that flew over Sibelius one day and inspired the magnificent horn theme of the last movement.

Three oboe players converge: Douglas Boyd conducts as Celia Craig (ASO’s Principal Oboe) takes a new concerto on its maiden flight; it has been written especially for her by Judith Weir, whose music is much admired for its clarity and lightness. The sense of lift begins with Haydn’s Symphony No.96, the first one he wrote for his enthusiastic London fans. A bright, effervescent work with trumpets, timpani…and another oboe solo!

Guru of Chai

Indian Ink Theatre Company
New Zealand
Adelaide Premiere

The contradictions of India with its iPhones and ancient gods come alive in this beautifully wrought production from one of New Zealand’s most successful theatre companies.

A poor chai-wallah (tea-seller) has his life changed forever when a homeless girl in a Bangalore railway station brings the place to a standstill with the beauty of her singing. An honest young policeman falls hopelessly in love but is rejected in favour of a disreputable poet.

Our Guru (Jacob Rajan) is a chameleon, channelling seventeen different characters who are by turns charming, hilarious, loathsome and absurdly profound.

Shadow puppetry, sleight-of-hand and evocative music wonderfully animate the Guru’s serpentine tale: as he makes his tea, he also changes your life.

While I Was Waiting
Date Tue 30th Oct 2018 to Wed 31st Oct 2018
Omar Abusaada and Mohammed Al Attar
Syria
Australian Premiere

Performed in Arabic with English surtitles

After crossing one of the security check-points widespread in Damascus, 30-year-old Taim was brutally beaten under mysterious circumstances and is now in a coma. As his family and friends try to make sense of what has happened to him, they are forced to confront painful realities as long-buried secrets and complicated relationships are revealed. On a two-tiered stage, the audience watches Taim’s loved ones gather around his hospital bed, while his spirit simultaneously observes them from above. In joining his voice to theirs, together they attempt to understand the upheaval in their everyday lives.

Taim’s coma is a metaphor for war-ravaged Syria, a country hovering between hope and despair, life and death. Celebrated Syrian playwright Mohammed Al Attar and director Omar Abusaada masterfully humanise a political situation, offering a gripping portrait of ordinary characters facing ordinary problems in a world turned strange and cruel – and in doing so, powerfully connecting Syrian people with the rest of the world.
Salt
Date Tue 30th Oct 2018 to Wed 31st Oct 2018
Eko Supriyanto
Indonesia
Adelaide Premiere

Eko Supriyanto is a pioneering choreographer in Indonesian contemporary dance. Following on from his acclaimed production Cry Jailolo (OzAsia Festival 2015), this latest work combines the forms of Jatilan (Magelang folk trance dance) and Cakalele (war dance from North Maluku), and places them within the state of weightlessness, addressing the rhythm and force of the ocean, which makes up 80% of the Indonesian archipelago.

Capturing the spellbinding duality of the tensions between life-giving water and caustic salt, this engaging and mesmeric solo work is suggestive of embedded cultural hierarchies and changing perspectives. Driven by Dimawan Krisnowo Adji’s dream-like score, Salt is an acclaimed piece fundamentally rooted in nature and our place within it.
Baling
Date Wed 31st Oct 2018 to Fri 2nd Nov 2018
Malaysia
Australian Premiere

On December 28, 1955, three national leaders held a highly publicised meeting that would change the course of history. The location: A small classroom in northern Malaya. The aim: To end seven long years of devastating revolutionary war.

For two days, newly-elected Malayan leader Tunku Abdul Rahman, British colonial official David Marshall and Communist insurgent Chin Peng engaged in clashes of will, impassioned debate and shrewd political manoeuverings in an attempt to resolve the country’s division.

Direct from Malaysia’s cutting edge Five Arts Centre, the original ‘Baling Talks’ transcripts come to life in the hands of performer-researchers who themselves share conflicting political views – and whose gripping documentary-style questioning refuses to let the audience watch as an impartial bystander.
Firebird
Date Thu 1st Nov 2018 to Fri 2nd Nov 2018
A feather-touch on a single string can create magic. Natsuko Yoshimoto, ASO’s Concertmaster, plays the Romantic, ever-popular First Violin Concerto of Max Bruch. She is joined by Karina Canellakis from New York – herself a fine violinist, and now highly sought as a conductor.

Enchantment or sleep-deprivation? Mozart wrote the music of the ‘Haffner’ Symphony late at night to an unrealistic deadline. When he revisited it sixth months later, he couldn’t remember a note, but was delighted to find it a sparkling, effervescent work.

Stravinsky’s vivid 1910 ballet score begins in shadow. Ivan is bewitched as he enters the garden of evil King Kashchei. But when The Firebird appears, the spell of darkness is broken, and the finale is simply dazzling.
Here Is The Message You Asked For...
Date Thu 1st Nov 2018 to Sat 3rd Nov 2018
Don't Tell Anyone Else ;-)
Directed by Sun Xiaoxing

China
Australian Premiere

Enter a dream-like bedroom saturated with subculture in this hyper-real production by Sun Xiaoxing, Beijing’s leading figure in the fringe theatre scene. A group of millennial girls sit in a fishbowl dormitory, using their phones and doing whatever takes their fancy. Surreal and self-obsessed, the girls simultaneously exist in the real world and a virtual fantasy: a hypnotic mix of screens, junk food, cosplay, live streaming, stuffed cartoon characters and live post-rock music. The audience is both voyeur and participant, encouraged to download a social app to exchange texts with the girls during the performance. Here is the Message You Asked For... is a raw portrait of digital disconnection and the increasing cyber reality encroaching on our lives today.

The cast occasionally speak in Mandarin but the words are intentionally unintelligible and therefore no surtitles are used. To interact with the performers during the show, audience will need to download and use WeChat.
Nassim
Date Thu 1st Nov 2018 to Sat 3rd Nov 2018
Nassim Soleimanpour and Bush Theatre
Iran , UK
Australian Premiere

No director. No rehearsal. Just a script that remains unseen in a sealed box until a different guest actor steps out onto the stage every night. As the pages turn, both the unprepared actor and audience find themselves partaking in an audacious theatrical experiment.

A tender connection between strangers is forged when the story left behind by the playwright begins to unravel. Surprising, disarming and ultimately moving, Nassim is at once touchingly autobiographical and powerfully universal.

After the international acclaim of his first unconventional play White Rabbit, Red Rabbit, Nassim Soleimanpour was intent on creating a work his own mother could understand which involves using words from his native language Farsi. Nassim is an exploration of the beauty and politics of language, and the ways in which mother-tongues both divide and unite us.

Stan Lai and Performance Workshop

Taiwan
Australian Premiere , Exclusive to Adelaide

A masterwork of contemporary Chinese theatre, this hilarious yet poignant production tells the story of two drama troupes who find themselves mistakenly booked into the same theatre space. One group is rehearsing Secret Love, a romantic memory play about a couple separated by the Chinese Revolution, while the other company is preparing a farcical period comedy, Peach Blossom Land.

Despite initial disdain for each others' productions, the cast of these two wildly different plays slowly, almost magically, merge as the performers complete each other's lines and intertwined themes emerge. By the end, the audience is left to contemplate the burdens of memory, history, longing, love and the power of theatre itself.

Regarded as one of China's 'top 10 plays of the century', this masterwork of contemporary Chinese theatre comes from the legendary writer and director Stan Lai making his Australian debut with this universally acclaimed production as Secret Love In Peach Blossom Land is a modern classic that holds a special place in hearts around the world.

The Christmas Pageant escorted Father Christmas to the Magic Cave.

Created by Sir Edward Hayward (Mr Bill), who was the grandson of Mr E. W. Hayward; the Pageant featured approximately eight floats, four bands and ran for around 40 minutes. 200,000 spectators came to watch the Pageant.

“Be embraced, you millions! This kiss is for the whole world!”

The Ninth. As we reach 100 years since the 1918 Armistice, Beethoven’s immortal appeal for the world to come together as one still needs to be heard. For three long movements the orchestra struggles alone. Then singers and chorus join to create a spine-tingling outpouring of joy, filling the Adelaide Town Hall with hope and light.

Leonard Bernstein famously conducted this symphony on Christmas Day after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, changing Schiller’s Ode to Joy (“Freude”) into an Ode to Freedom (“Freiheit”). We close off Bernstein’s centenary year by celebrating with his popular, idiosyncratic settings of Hebrew psalms. The choir ends by reaffirming “how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell together in unity.”

Passenger – Runaway Tour
Date Wed 21st Nov 2018
Following the release of single ‘Hell Or High Water’ and the announce of his tenth studio album 'Runaway', Passenger has announced his 2018 Australia and New Zealand tour dates. Along with this announcement, Passenger (aka Mike Rosenberg) has released a music video for the album’s title track, ‘Runaway’. The album has been largely recorded in Australia and will be dropped on Friday August 31 via Black Crow Records.

The British singer-songwriter will play a show in Auckland, as well as all major cities in Australia to showcase his forthcoming album. 'Runaway' finds Passenger embracing the epic once again—the melodies are unforgettable, the choruses colossal. Even though it was recorded between the UK and Australia with co-producer Chris Vallejo (INXS, Empire Of The Sun, Josh Pyke), the 10-track album was imagined as unfolding against a backdrop of American landscapes. And so, rather than following usual video process in studios or track-by-track, he and video director Jarrad Seng spent three weeks making videos across the US to capture the visual accompaniments to the aural landscapes.

The video for ‘Runaway’ reflects this beautifully, seeing Rosenberg run through breathtaking landscapes in the US—from the...

Date Fri 1st Mar 2019 to Sun 3rd Mar 2019
Having played to half a million people in 22 cities around the world, The Magic Flute finally comes to Australia for the opening weekend of the 2019 Adelaide Festival.

“Artistic Masterworks” and “Crowd Pleasers” are categories that rarely intersect. Arguably, only once: in The Magic Flute. In 1791, long before anyone knew what demographics were, it crossed them all to become an instant hit and has remained so ever since.

This staging by Barrie Kosky and Suzanne Andrade (from 1927, the company that wowed Festival audiences with Golem in 2016) is marvellous in the true sense of the word. It manages to keep Mozart’s unique coin spinning so that we never fail to appreciate either of its dazzling sides: On a musical level it is sublime but its operatically game-changing blend of live action and animation make it endlessly delightful to audiences of all ages and experience.

Friends of the Adelaide Festival receive 15% discount and can already access priority booking. Tickets will be released to the general public at 9am 22 August 2018.
