Heysen Prize for Landscape Exhibition 2018
Date Sat 6th Oct 2018 to Sun 9th Dec 2018
The Hahndorf Academy in Hahndorf's presents The Heysen Prize for Landscape Exhibition 2018 featuring the works of 51 finalists. Since the inaugural prize in 1997 this biennial event has become a significant contemporary arts award in Australia, commemorating the nationally and internationally eminent local artist Sir Hans Heysen (1877-1968).

Famous for his paintings and drawings of the Adelaide Hills (where he lived just out of Hahndorf at a property called The Cedars) and the Flinders Ranges, Heysen was also a conservationist. He purchased neighbouring agricultural land to protect the magnificent gum trees which he loved to paint, and often depicted his concerns in paintings.

For the Heysen Prize, landscape includes all possible aspects of its natural, rural or urban forms. Emerging and established artists have responded with works depicting majestic mountain ranges in the Flinders Ranges, dry desert lands, coastal scenes, urban streetscapes and bushfire affected areas. Each landscape has a story which as been captured by artists in a diverse cross section of media including painting, drawing, ceramics, textile, photography, glass, sculpture, video and prints.

Sera Waters (SA) was announced as the winner of the $15,000 prize on October 8 2016 for her work 'Fritz and the Rose Garden'.

Workshop: Topiary Craft
Date Sun 4th Nov 2018
The fascinating art of topiary isn't new, and in fact dates back to the first century AD, when Roman gardeners first began shaping of trees and shrubs by regular trimming and garden craft.

Topiary entered European gardening's mainstream during the Italian Renaissance, when gardeners turned back to ancient Rome and Greece for inspiration.

In this Masterclass you'll discover this craft's rich history, while learning how to grow, train and maintain your own topiary collection - carrying on the ancient tradition.

Select a plant from the Botanic Gardens Of South Australia's Nursery and start the training process. Plants worked on in class can be taken home.
Katie Sarah First Female Seven-Seven Climber Talk and Afternoon Tea
Date Sun 4th Nov 2018
Join us for an amazing afternoon in the Hanhndorf Band Hall to hear local girl Katie Sarah's inspirational story.
Katie, who recently celebrated her 50th birthday at Manaslu base camp Nepal (followed by a successful summit) and mother of 3 from Adelaide, became the first woman in the world to complete the fabled Seven-Seven challenge earlier this year after she summited Antarctica's Mt Sidley on January 14, joining only seven other climbers in history, all of them men, in this elite club.

Many people are familiar with the Seven Summits challenge, where a climber must summit the highest peaks on seven different continents (a number of Australian women have already achieved this goal) but to qualify for the Seven-Seven, Sarah not only conquered the Seven Summits, but also the seven highest volcanic peaks across the world in some of the most remote locations on earth.

Incredibly Sarah's journey only started in 2006 with a successful summit of Bolivia’s highest peak, Navado Sajama (6542m) which saw her take her climbing interest from the gym, to Moonarie and then to the world.
