Sharon Van Etten – Remind Me Tomorrow Tour
Date Fri 7th Jun 2019
Sharon Van Etten World Tour heads to QPAC.

Touring with her five-piece band, Van Etten returns to Australia after myriad endeavours such as guest starring in Netflix series The OA and David Lynch’s revival of Twin Peaks.

Recently released to rave reviews, Remind Me Tomorrow veers towards the driving, dark glimmer moods that have illuminated the edges of Van Etten’s music and pursues them full force. The breadth of her passions (musical, emotional and otherwise), of new careers and projects and lifelong roles, have inflected this album with a sense of warped-time perspective. It reckons with the life that gets lived when you put off the small and inevitable maintenance in favour of something more present.

Expect an honest and subtle approach to love and longing, with an upbeat energy that offers an unexpected gift to Van Etten’s celebrated minimal-meditative sound.

Date Wed 12th Jun 2019
Embark on a journey to Iceland and into the fierce lives of the Vikings, when Kári Gíslason (The Promise of Iceland and co-author of Saga Land with Richard Fidler) shares one of the great saga stories of the north.

This is a tale of exile, and of a family that a thousand years ago was forced to settle in the remote Westfjords of Iceland. They built a farm, fell in love and married. And discovered that life in their new home would not be a peaceful one.

In 2018, Kári travelled back to his birthplace and into the footsteps of the Viking settlers. He went in search of people whose stories are still loved. The sagas are the national treasures of Iceland, and monuments of world literature. But they are not just stories of exile. At their heart, the sagas are also tales of belonging and return.

Join Kári for an evening of dazzling storytelling, sounds and images as he takes us to the extraordinary landscapes and sagas of the Vikings.

Vivaldi Bach Paganini - Chamber Philharmonia Cologne
Date Wed 12th Jun 2019
The Chamber Philharmonia Cologne (Germany) is coming back to Ipswich in June 2019 with a powerful new programme. Don't miss this amazing international music event, held at Ipswich’s beautiful St Paul's Anglican Church (ca 1859).

“Classical music the world over” is the motto of the Chamber Philharmonia Cologne. It is irrelevant whether the musicians are playing in a little village church, in the open air, in Cologne Cathedral or in the Sydney Opera House – their enthusiasm to play music is the same every time.

The Chamber Philharmonia Cologne hand-picks pieces for their programme from a wide variety of musical epochs. This sees familiar greats like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Vivaldi in dialogue with works from people such as Sergei Prokofieff through to the “King of Tango” Astor Piazzolla. This mix promises great diversity of the very highest order, without us having to preach to the audience in the process. After all, music is for entertainment and not for instruction.

Quite simply put: Classical music the world over!

This event accepts companion cards and is wheelchair friendly.

Through anonymous submissions, people talked about identity and experience in all its messy glory and stumbling words. This show is about the language of figuring things out.

Bolshoi Ballet – Jewels

Each of the three movements draws on a different stone for its inspiration and a different composer for its sound:

- the French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the lyricism of Emeralds
- the fire of Rubies comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York, and
- the grandeur and elegance of Diamonds set to Tchaikovsky’s opulent Third Symphony.

Sumptuously beautiful, Jewels offers audiences a unique chance for the Bolshoi Ballet to showcase its dancing strength in depth.

School of Rock
Date Fri 12th Jul 2019 to Sun 28th Jul 2019
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber book by Julian Fellowes lyrics by Glenn Slater.

Andrew Lloyd Webber, the man who brought rock and romance to Broadway, is back with a new heart-stirring hit. School of Rock is a New York Times Critics’ Pick and “an inspiring jolt of energy, joy and mad skillz!” (Entertainment Weekly). Reuters raves “Andrew Lloyd Webber has Broadway rocking again!”

Based on the hit film, this hilarious new musical follows Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There, he turns a class of straight-A students into a guitar-shredding, bass-slapping, mind-blowing rock band.

While teaching these pint-sized prodigies what it means to truly rock, Dewey falls for the school’s beautiful but uptight headmistress, helping her rediscover the wild child within. (The New York Times says, “Be Warned! There’s a love story in this one.”)

Featuring 14 new songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber and all the original songs from the movie, this high-octane smash hit delivers face-melting guitar riffs and touching romance in equally awesome doses!

(A transaction fee of AUD7.20 applies per transaction).

Southern Cross Soloists: Maps and Journeys - Navigating by the Sky
Date Sun 21st Jul 2019
Guest artists Chris Williams (trumpet and didgeridoo) and Eddie Ayres (narrator) join Southern Cross Soloists to explore musical works inspired by the concept of navigating by the sky, sea and land.

Navigation is one of the greatest challenges that humans have faced since the beginning of time, although with today’s technology we take it for granted.

Long before Europeans set foot on Australian soil, Indigenous Australians had rich astronomical traditions, and extraordinary navigational abilities. Through their unique understanding of the star constellations and their creation of star maps and Songlines, they were able to establish sophisticated trade routes covering vast distances across the Australian continent. Likewise, European explorers were using star navigation to explore the unknown east and southern hemispheres.

Maps and Journeys will explore the routes of both these cultures and their eventual intersection, through music and insightful narration from ABC radio personality, Eddie Ayres. The concert will also feature a world premiere of a new work called Ginan: the Southern Cross star given a new indigenous name to recognise Aboriginal astronomy.

The Young King tells the story of a young boy born to a princess and a poor woodland man. Snatched from his parents as a baby, the Young King is raised by a kindly goatherd in a deep forest. Years pass and the old King, father of the princess, nears the end of his life. The old king calls for the boy to be brought to the palace; there he tells him, “You are not a young goatherd, you are my grandson the Young King and heir to my throne”.

From an international football match at Amsterdam stadium in 1995, when André filled the half-time interval with a performance of a classic waltz, to his Maastricht concerts of 2011, where André premiered ‘And The Waltz Goes On’, composed by Oscarâ-winning actor Sir Anthony Hopkins, this popular dance has often taken centre stage. André has composed many waltzes and since 1987, he and his Johann Strauss Orchestra have been delighting audiences all over the world with their magnificent renditions of classic waltzes.

Audiences are sure to be swept off their feet by this magical concert on the big screen in the comfort of their local cinema as they join the King of...

From Martha Graham to Bob Fosse to Paula Abdul, Jacob knows it all. Through a rollercoaster of dance moves we explore the broken families, addictions and political escapades that fuelled the lives of these extraordinary artists.

Over the hour, Jacob discovers that you can study your heroes all you like, but it doesn’t make your own path any clearer. If he wants to be just like his idols, it’s time to stop studying and start creating.

100 Years of the History of Dance is a physical theatre performance blending dance and theatre in an unusual, charming and funny way. Dance isn’t a foreign academic concept, it’s for everyone… and it feels good!

New Woman
Date Fri 13th Sep 2019 to Sun 15th Mar 2020
Fiercely independent, adventurous and often overlooked, Brisbane’s female artists have employed passion and determination to ensure art in Brisbane finds its voice. Each generation has produced artwork in response to the rapidly changing social, cultural and economic circumstances of the city. New Woman traces vast changes in ideas of gender, artistic styles, subject matter and ways of seeing the world through sculpture, painting and photography.

Works from leading 1920s artists and advocates Daphne Mayo and Vida Lahey set the scene for the vital role women played in gaining respect and investment for the city’s arts. With Brisbane’s decreasing isolation in the following decades, new ideas of modernism and abstraction found unique interpretations in the works of female artists.

While Brisbane artists such as Judy Watson, Fiona Foley, Tracey Moffatt and Davida Allen are contemporary leaders on the world stage, New Woman explores the influence of generations of women before them.

New Woman will include significant historical and contemporary works from the Museum of Brisbane and City of Brisbane Collections, as well as loans from various institutions and private lenders.

Jon Molvig: Maverick
Date Sat 14th Sep 2019 to Sun 2nd Feb 2020
Jon Molvig (1923-70) spent the greater part of his productive life in Brisbane where he dominated the art scene into the late 1960s. Brisbane was the catalyst for his major work, providing him with scope for his expressionist view of the world. Outspoken and rebellious, Molvig was also a charismatic teacher whose uncompromising commitment to painting inspired a group of young artists. This survey acknowledges his contribution to the local art community, features his early, vibrant works drawing on European influences and brings his stylistic eclecticism to the fore.

Accompanying the exhibition, the first substantial publication on Jon Molvig for three decades, will feature new scholarship on Molvig’s unique contribution to Australian art.

Australian String Quartet presents Ives Westlake Debussy
Date Tue 17th Sep 2019
Ives, String Quartet no 1 From the Salvation Army
Nigel Westlake, String Quartet no 3* (World Premiere)
Debussy, String Quartet op 10

The music of Charles Ives is made of pictures from a long-lost America, depicted with such vivid immediacy that they seem absolutely alive. Through the magic lantern of his musical imagery, this New England world appears like a nostalgic dream – white-painted churches in autumn forests filled with congregations joyously chanting hymns and spirituals.

Not dissimilar to the inquisition that Ives undertakes, Claude Debussy’s quest to liberate sensuality led to a revolution in French musical identity. His string quartet replaces rigid thematic structures with a free flow of colours, motifs and gestures in the search for melodic rapture, realising his decadent dictum, ‘Pleasure is the Law.’

The vibrant colour and energy for which Nigel Westlake is renowned make his eagerly-awaited new work a splendid companion to Debussy and Ives.

Camerata – When the World Was Wide
Date Thu 28th Nov 2019
Featuring:
Tama Matheson – writer and actor
Artists from Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts

What to expect:
Not quite a concert, not quite a play, When The World Was Wide is a melding of narrative, acting and concert music. It digs deep into the life and sparring friendship of two of Australia’s most iconic poets and writers, Henry Lawson and Banjo Paterson, drawing on atmospheric and evocative music to set the scene. When The World Was Wide is the fifth collaboration between Camerata and Tama Matheson. Audiences and critics continue to praise these adventurous artistic collaborations.

This was engaging and significant, an enjoyable event brokered by the productive, no frills alliance between music and theatre, where each art form was fully realised yet supportive of each other. Such success in the vexed terrain of interdisciplinary venture is rare. (Limelight Magazine on the 2017 smash hit, The White Mouse).
