'Around the Place' - Solo Exhibition, Pamela Gough, Visual Artist
Date Thu 18th Oct 2018 to Sun 28th Oct 2018
Pamela’s contemporary landscapes are narratives embedded with stories, maps, symbols and homes, especially from her own backyard of Brisbane.

Pamela is a Brisbane born artist and she celebrates the joy of those places around her… her city with its forever blue sky, the silver and red triangles of roofs and those Queenslander houses, unique as they straddle the ridges supported by stilts and balance on the side of the hill going with the harmonious flow of the land rather than cutting slabs into the earth.

She says “beneath what we see lies the dreams and plans of those who have gone before us, who lived and loved and built up the place which we are blessed with today”.

This exhibition features new paintings and sketches inspired by many places around where she lives and across Australia, The Scenic Rim and Glasshouse Mountains on either side of Brisbane and many places which have captured her heart and soul.

Growing up in Queensland is far removed from her family’s Celtic origins and this is reflected in her work as well as acknowledging and being respectful of the original inhabitants of the land on which she lives the Aboriginal Turrbal people.

Public Talk - Do You Know What Your True Purpose Is?
Date Fri 19th Oct 2018
With Tibetan lama Dzogchen Rinpoche.

Many of us live our lives without asking ourselves what the real purpose of it is. We just keep going day in day out, following our routines and habits, attending to our families and children and work to provide for all that we accumulate. All of this keeps us so busy that we completely miss our purpose without even knowing it.

On a subtler level we are driven by our desire for success, power or recognition believing this is the purpose, or we try to maximise our comfort, safety, health and happiness with pleasure being our main goal. However, even if we achieve this temporarily, we can never be sure to have it forever.

In this Public Talk, drawing on the Dzogchen Teachings, Dzogchen Rinpoche will point out that by recognising and following the real purpose of our lives, we will not only lead a truly meaningful and valuable life, we can also rest in everlasting happiness.

Doors open at 7pm, the talk begins at 7.30pm.

Queensland Pops Orchestra - Amigos Para Siempre - Friends for Life
Date Sat 20th Oct 2018
You’ve heard of the saying ‘two’s company, three’s a crowd’? Well, Pavarotti, Carreras and Domingo (aka The Three Tenors) gave both the number three and opera a new-found street cred with the masses, single-handedly catapulting arias like Puccini’s Nessun Dorma to mega-hit single status. They redefined the musical performance landscape when they first hit the stage together in the early 1990s, their vocal combination now the stuff of legend.

Not to be outdone, Patrick Pickett and the mighty Queensland Pops Orchestra revisit the artistry of this winning sound with their very own ‘Friends for Life’: Gregory Moore, Nathan Kneen and Adam Lopez, the stars of this very special milestone concert. All three have earned their entertainment stripes with the Pops over several decades … and they’re back – with soaring voices and stage banter aplenty – to show off their wonderful talents in this, the third of the Pops’ 2018 series.

Between them, they’ve notched up 20 years of personal friendship. But theirs is also a story of an intimate musical brotherhood, as strong today as it was back in their student days at the Queensland Conservatorium.

The Dawn Wall - Brisbane, presented by K2
Date Thu 25th Oct 2018
The Dawn Wall is here! Join them for this special screening presented in Brisbane by K2 which will include event stalls and on stage introduction to the most anticipated climbing film ever made.

In January, 2015, American rock climbers Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson captivated the world with their effort to climb the Dawn Wall, a seemingly impossible 3,000 foot rock face in Yosemite National Park, California.

But for Tommy Caldwell, the Dawn Wall was much more than just a climb. It was the culmination of a lifetime defined by overcoming obstacles. At the age of 22, the climbing prodigy was taken hostage by rebels in Kyrgyzstan. Shortly after, he lost his index finger in an accident, but resolved to come back stronger. When his marriage fell apart, he escaped the pain by fixating on the extraordinary goal of free climbing the Dawn Wall. Blurring the line between dedication and obsession, Caldwell and his partner Jorgeson spend six years meticulously plotting and practicing their route.

More than just a climbing movie, The Dawn Wall is an epic and inspirational story that will take you into the hearts and minds of the protagonists and is to be enjoyed by all.
Live At The Lodge Number 12
Date Thu 25th Oct 2018
The 12th instalment of Valley Heat Records’ 'Live At The Lodge' features Molecules To Minds, Signals and the debut performance of Monsterra.

Molecules To Minds is a post-rock band from Brisbane, Australia. Debut EP 'Ascent Into Insignificance' at Apple Music, Spotify and Bandcamp.

Signals is a three-piece rock band from Brisbane. Genre-less to the point of fitting into a genre, Signals combines rich atmospheric and psychedelic guitar textures which transform to harrowing distortions of melodic existentialism. Afrocentric drum beats cultivate into hard hitting rock rhythms which lead a cacophony of instrumental explosions.

Monsterra began the same way any telluric entity begins. The convergence of three elements (Tyler Cooney on guitar, Sam Castan on drums, and Blake Lonie on bass) with complimentary properties resulting in a sonic jungle of monstrous proportions.

From their first point of contact at university to their inception as a band, and their musical explorations through a broad spectrum of musical styles both individually and collectively, Monsterra aim to provide unity in chaos, harmony in dissonance, and rhythmic landscapes with more facets than finely cut diamond.

Date Fri 26th Oct 2018 to Sat 3rd Nov 2018
They’re bringing Italian theatre back to Brisbane!
After last year’s sell-out Italian language production, Danteatro and Growl Theatre are collaborating again to present a show entirely in Italian.

With English translation displayed above the stage (surtitles) for those who don’t speak the language, or for hearing impaired.

Synopsis:
Keeping up appearances in front of the neighbours takes constant attention to detail and clever tactics. And it is especially important when we are in the economically booming Italy of the 1960s, where the race is on to acquire consumer goods such as a fridge, a car, or a television set. Meanwhile, young people are rebelling - embracing revolutionary politics, rock music and… yoga!

Teresa Brandolini’s mission of upholding her family’s dignity and respectability, while the neighbours flaunt their superior spending power, requires her to maintain an elaborate smokescreen for onlookers (‘fumo negli occhi’). When her arch-rival, signora De Marchi, brags that she is off to the Isle of Capri just for the weekend, Teresa plans her revenge, Brandolini-style! Will she win out in the reputation stakes, or will the antics of family members, the maid, and an oppressed, non-unionised burglar spin things wildly out of her control?

Global Champagne Day
Date Sun 28th Oct 2018
Every year, The Champagne Dame creates a new show for Global Champagne Day! This year, Kyla will be showcasing Grand Marques Versus Grower—telling both sides of the story.

A ‘grand marque’ quite literally translates to a ‘big brand’ but in French the title for this group of Champagne houses has such an impressive and imposing sound and rightly so. Grand Marques are the biggest houses in champagne in terms of sales and the corresponding size of their brands.

Grower or ‘Recoltant’ in French is a producer that owns 95 per cent of the fruit they use for making champagne. Legally they can buy up to five per cent to supplement their production. Grower champagne accounts for just three per cent of champagne sold annually.

The Grand Marques however are not as 'Terroir-driven' as the smaller, growers of Champagne. It's not right or wrong, better or worse, it's just different. They will show you the difference over six champagnes—three grand marques and three growers who are instrumental in leading their respective sides of Champagne.

Price includes six champagnes and nibbles.

Russian Resurrection Film Festival 2018
Date Wed 7th Nov 2018 to Wed 14th Nov 2018
The Russian Resurrection Film Festival opens with The Coach, directed by and featuring super hunk Danila Kozlovsky, the biggest name in Russia cinema at the moment. The Coach captures the emotion and spirit of the Russian football world, following Yuri, the country’s star striker, and his fall from grace and subsequent redemptive arc. The film is heart-warming and inspirational—a great choice for the festival premiere.

In The Hood is another Danila Kozlovsky film. This one is edgy and hyper-masculine action thriller. Also on offer are two films by Konstantin Khabenskiy, Selfie and Sobibor. The former is a psychological thriller and the latter is a Holocaust drama centring on the real-life Sobibor concentration camp breakout. Laugh out loud with Night Shift, the Russian Full Monty equivalent that also pokes fun at Russia's political system and culture. Lady With a Little Dog is a classic that will take you (five/ten/twenty years) back to your first love. Another romance is I'm Losing Weight, a light rom-com based on friendship and love. Jumpman is a highly realistic, brutal and gripping arthouse drama.

Bear the Mammoth – Years Under Glass Australian Tour
Date Fri 9th Nov 2018
Art as Catharsis is proud to announce Bear the Mammoth’s Australian tour in support of the release of the band’s sophomore record ‘Years Under Glass’.

Bear The Mammoth’s dreamy production and drifting progressions have earned them fair comparisons to the likes of Mogwai, sleepmakeswaves, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Rós and Bossk. Their sound boasts a level of polish that easily matches, even surpasses, their post-rock contemporaries in both the national and international scene. Since their first EP in 2012, the band have since supported progressive and metal artists such as Anathema, We Lost The Sea, Jakob, Closure In Moscow and countless others, only proving this point further.

Over the course of ‘Years Under Glass’, Bear The Mammoth sets more than just a few elaborate musical soundscapes. Militant drumming patterns, howling, cold riffs and warm bass lines create something both weightless as a cloud, yet as grounded as an earthquake. Wrapped up with a flawless, crisp level of production and instrumental polish, ‘Years Under Glass’ has the makings of a post-prog classic from start to finish.

The Armed Man
Date Sun 11th Nov 2018
Brisbane Symphony Orchestra joins with the Sunshine Coast Oriana Choir to perform a moving and inspiring concert to commemorate the end of the First World War.

Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man draws on many sources, from the Catholic mass to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Its blending of ancient and modern with Jenkins' deeply felt reactions to the war in Kosovo, makes it a fitting work to commemorate the centenary of the ending of the First World War.

Also featured is George Butterworth's symphonic rhapsody, A Shropshire Lad, based on the poems of A.E. Housman.

The work is steeped in the composer's love of his country and the underlying sadness of leaving it to fight and, as was indeed the case, not come back.

Butterworth was killed in the Battle of the Somme in 1915.

Peter Sculthorpe's Small Town also reflects a love of country.

This particular piece pays gentle homage to all small Australian towns, each with its memorial to the local men and boys who died in the First and Second World Wars, and features two trumpets playing The Last Post.

Finally, the famous Albinoni Adagio, used in many films and most movingly, in Peter Weir's Gallipoli.

Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company - Giselle
Date Wed 14th Nov 2018 to Sun 18th Nov 2018
Italy’s celebrated Teatro alla Scala Ballet Company (La Scala Ballet) performs for the first time ever in Australia – and only in Brisbane – as part of the QPAC International Series.

Bringing their 110-strong company (including 75 dancers) to QPAC’s Lyric Theatre, La Scala Ballet will perform two iconic productions, both much-loved and stunning works of the classical repertoire – Rudolf Nureyev’s festive Don Quixote, and the haunting Giselle.

With its hauntingly beautiful ensemble of tutus gliding eerily through the forest, Giselle is classical tradition in all its purity and splendour.

Featuring an international cast, Giselle continues to thrill audiences with its contrast between sunny village life and a dark and terrible kingdom inhabited by spirits.

A tale of unrequited love, betrayal and redemption, Giselle is the story of an innocent peasant girl who dies of a broken heart upon learning her beloved Albrecht is engaged to someone else. Resurrected in the afterlife by the vengeful Wili maidens, Giselle must perform the ultimate act of forgiveness to prevent Albrecht falling prey to their irresistible dance.

La Scala Ballet Company performs the unforgettable original Coralli-Perrot choreography in this revival by Yvette Chauviré, set to while Adolphe Adam’s score.
Passenger – Runaway Tour
Date Thu 15th Nov 2018
Following the release of single ‘Hell Or High Water’ and the announce of his tenth studio album 'Runaway', Passenger has announced his 2018 Australia and New Zealand tour dates. Along with this announcement, Passenger (aka Mike Rosenberg) has released a music video for the album’s title track, ‘Runaway’. The album has been largely recorded in Australia and will be dropped on Friday August 31 via Black Crow Records.

The British singer-songwriter will play a show in Auckland, as well as all major cities in Australia to showcase his forthcoming album. 'Runaway' finds Passenger embracing the epic once again—the melodies are unforgettable, the choruses colossal. Even though it was recorded between the UK and Australia with co-producer Chris Vallejo (INXS, Empire Of The Sun, Josh Pyke), the 10-track album was imagined as unfolding against a backdrop of American landscapes. And so, rather than following usual video process in studios or track-by-track, he and video director Jarrad Seng spent three weeks making videos across the US to capture the visual accompaniments to the aural landscapes.

Bombino Australian Tour - Brisbane
Date Thu 15th Nov 2018
Following the release of his fourth consecutive #1 album ‘Deran’ earlier this year, Tuareg guitarist and singer Omara ‘Bombino’ Moctar who is currently on a massive European tour has announced Australia as his next tour destination. Bombino will bring his captivating band to Oz performing a set list of classic favourites alongside the all new Deran.

Born in the shade of an acacia tree about 80 miles north west of the ancient town of Agadez, Bombino has a deep connection to his home. While in recent years the rest of the world has largely written off Tuareg as a hot and savage Sahara wasteland, a bolt hole for religious extremists and terrorists with little to offer apart from the oil, gold and phosphates that lie beneath its soil, Bombino would like us to take a closer look and think again. His feelings are beautifully summed up in the song “Tehigren” (‘Trees’) from Deran, ‘Do not forget the green trees / In our valleys in the Sahara / In the shade of which, / Rest the beautiful girls / Radiant and lovable’. “We’re a people who wish for peace,”

Mad Professor – Dub Electronic Tour 2018
Date Fri 23rd Nov 2018
The question is often asked, just how sane is The Mad Professor ?Judging by the contents of his character and by the results of his recordings and the variety of the artistes who has passed through Ariwa studios then he is certainly one of the sanest producers around. Neil Fraser began his musical career on the technical side of things as a service engineer for mixing desks and amplifiers. That skill and a good ear for "on key" music became his asset when he began building a four track studio at his home in Thornton Heath.

At school Neil was christened Mad Professor by friends who were amazed by the experiments he was carrying out. By the turn of the Eighties, Mad Professor launched the Ariwa label and released 'Come back Again' by Sgt. Pepper, then came 'Young Girl' by Family Love, 'Love Power/Love On A Two Way Street' by Divinia Stone, 'True True Loving' by Aquizim.

Gary Óg will once again look to take this country by storm after many highly successful Australia-wide tours through the years, which left audiences begging for more. Hailing from the Gorbals area in Glasgow, Scotland; Óg developed his craft growing up amongst an Irish community, which in past generations have immigrated to the area in the hope of a better life. “Many people, who were just off the boat from Ireland, settled in the Gorbals,” he said.

It was from these working class streets in Glasgow that he developed his penchant for Bob Dylan, Christy Moore and ballads of Irish freedom. He quickly started a band, Éire Og (meaning Young Ireland), which developed rapidly beyond his expectations and was soon immensely popular in Scotland, Ireland and most of Western Europe. Éire Og attracted impressive crowds, particularly in their ancestral homeland of Ireland—and it’s a place that Óg still loves to perform.

Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney says “it’s music that once you hear it, you can’t live without it”. The National’s Matt Berninger said that for months, Passerby (Mistletone, 2014) was “the only album I wanted to listen to”. “What first hits is that voice,” writes Peter Blackstock (No Depression),“a peaceful serenity that reaches deep into the heart.”
