Direct from a sold-out season at the Sydney Opera House, George’s Marvellous Medicine returns to QPAC packed to the rafters with even more mischief, music, magic and mammoth laughs. Just remember—do not try this at home!

What starts as just another boring day for George quickly turns into a marvellous experiment of epic proportions! Cleverly adapted from the much loved book by Roald Dahl, George’s Marvellous Medicine bounds off the page in a spectacular live show for the whole family.

On a good day, George can’t stand his Grandma. She complains all the time, she’s mean and she smells funny. On this particular day, Grandma is much more annoying than usual and George has had enough. “George—make me a cup of tea! George—rub my feet! George—stop growing!” Ugh. Wanting to put an end to her constant nagging, George creates a special medicine, greater than any medicine in the history of the world. What he doesn’t expect is that this medicine may actually work—just not in the way he thinks.

Hamlet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
Date Thu 23rd Aug 2018 to Sun 9th Sep 2018
This Spring QSE returns to the gorgeous Roma Street Parkland Amphitheatre.

An Ensemble of 15 actors will present Hamlet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead in ‘rep’: alternating shows each night with actors playing the same role in both plays! A first for the company.

Prince Hamlet is having a rough time. After his father’s death, he is overlooked for the crown in favour of the guy who killed his dad and, even worse, married his mum. Caught between cultures and philosophies, Hamlet careens between paralysis and unconsidered action. Part philosopher, part improvised explosive device, Hamlet is the anti-hero we are all afraid we might become and, secretly want to.

Inspired by Hamlet and a classic in its own right Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead sees two ‘minor’ characters take centre stage. Witness the comic horror as these ordinary folks vacillate between witty banter and philosophical ponderings on the point of their existence all while being flung in and out of the orbit of the Prince of Denmark.

Both shows will include live music by QSE’s always popular band, make use of the magical atmosphere of the Parkland and be delivered with QSE’s trademark accessibility, clarity and wit.

Exhibition Opening , Amanda Penrose Hart
Date Fri 24th Aug 2018
Returning home to Brisbane for the first time in over 13 years, landscape painter Amanda Penrose Hart will exhibit a series of new works for her inaugural exhibition at Mitchell Fine Art. Predominantly a landscape painter, Penrose Hart travels extensively in search of inspiration. Painting in situ and later referencing from memory, Penrose Hart aims to capture not only the physical landscape but also the essence or feeling of a place.

“To paint is to unravel, deconstruct, explore and repack the truth. To look isn’t to see—to see is what is most important—sounds obvious, but to see is everything,” says Penrose Hart.

Originally living and studying in Brisbane, Penrose Hart is now based between her home in Sydney and her studio nestled in extensive acreage in country New South Wales. It is the rural property with quirky caravans and rugged bushland that has inspired many of the works in this exhibition. In contrast, the remaining artworks explore some of Australia’s vast coastline. On her recent trip up the east coast Penrose Hart has captured panoramic seascapes, atmospheric horizons and brooding shores in her recognisable impasto style.

Wild Forms
Date Sat 1st Sep 2018 to Sun 16th Sep 2018
'Wild Forms' is an exhibition featuring the work of sculptors, Peter Steller and Mela Cooke. The exhibition is in conjunction with 'Living Legends' by Laura Smith, a portrait artist.

Sculptor, Peter Steller turns salvaged timber into art with creations that constantly astound people as he pushes the boundaries! With some forms only a few millimetres thin, he uses the natural lines of the grain to enhance and transform each piece into a unique sculpture. It is the wood however, that ultimately guides and determines the final outcome of his sculptures, as the internal beauty within the salvaged wood is revealed, making his sculptures so individual.

Fellow sculptor, Mela Cooke, whose work has recently been exhibited in London, Brussels and Hong Kong, has after many years now settled with her love of bronze and her love of figurative work. Being a former physiotherapist, it is immediately appreciated when looking at her figurative sculptures that her hands have developed a unique intuition, to not only capture the graceful movement of the human body but also that of the animal kingdom. Her figurative sculptures convey the character and personality of her subjects with a simplicity of line and honesty of form.

The traditional four seasons of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter have been depicted in European art and music for centuries, but the Aboriginal experience of the seasons is a much more varied and subtler story that tells of the patterns of animal and plant life and their direct impact on survival.

Journey with The Song Company, as they are joined by dancers from the Thomas E.S. Kelly Project to trace the course of the Earth’s annual journey in movement and song, both old and new.

Madame Butterfly - Ipswich
Date Wed 5th Sep 2018
Love, honour and loyalty are put to the test in the tragic tale of Madame Butterfly.

The beautiful Japanese geisha, Cho-Cho (nicknamed Butterfly) hopelessly clings to the belief that her marriage to Lieutenant Pinkerton, an American naval officer, is a loving and eternal relationship. It is however, not to be. It is only upon Pinkerton’s return that Butterfly realise their union was not as she thought, ending in one of opera’s most infamous tragedies.

The beauty of exquisite and sensitive choreography together with Puccini’s score has made Melbourne City Ballet’s Madame Butterfly a tender and romantic production, not to be missed.

Redeveloped into a newly choreographed three-act ballet, Melbourne City Ballet’s production will capture the story’s essence through the fusion of traditional Japanese and classical ballet movement. The production showcases the company’s exquisite choreography and versatility, whilst featuring impressive new scenery, beautiful oriental costumes and of course Puccini’s evocative score.

Audiences are rarely given the opportunity to see Madame Butterfly performed as a full length ballet and this certainly is a production not to be missed.

Memorial , Brisbane Festival

In these troubled times, when the world feels on the edge of war, Alice Oswald’s Memorial stands as an urgent call to attention. To reflect on the potential horror of conflict. To avoid a tragedy.

Out of the darkness, a vast field of bodies emerges. At the centre, a woman stands as storyteller; the voice and heart of a god, the elements, time itself, and of a thousand lives caught in war.

In this richly layered, epic theatrical experience, the legendary Helen Morse brings impassioned life to Oswald’s exquisite elegy for each of the 215 dead soldiers named in Homer’s Iliad. Golden Globe nominee Jocelyn Pook’s other-worldly score, performed by an extraordinary ensemble of international musicians, wraps around the work.

All the while, a 215-strong community chorus moves as a haunting and uplifting presence across the stage, which evolves from battlefield to meadow to starlit sky.

Hamnet , Brisbane Festival
Date Sat 8th Sep 2018 to Wed 12th Sep 2018
William Shakespeare had one son. He named him Hamnet. Shakespeare then left home to pursue his career in the theatre, effectively abandoning his family. In 1596, he was told that the boy – who was then eleven years old – was seriously ill. By the time Shakespeare returned home, Hamnet had died. In 1599, Shakespeare wrote a play called Hamlet.

Hamnet is too young to understand Shakespeare. And he is one letter away from being a great man. We are too old to understand Hamnet. We meet in the middle, in a theatre.

From the makers of the multi award-winning productions LIPPY and Chekhov’s First Play (both seen at Brisbane Festival in 2016), Hamnet is a solo work for an 11-year-old boy. Using live video and dead video, Dead Centre attempts to bridge the gap between two generations.

Stalin's Piano , Brisbane Festival
Date Fri 14th Sep 2018
A composer, a piano, a virtuoso, historical footage and a wildly chilling – at times very funny – meeting of Joseph Stalin, Ai Wei Wei, Bertolt Brecht, Joseph Goebbels, John F. Kennedy, Maria Yudina, Gough Whitlam, Jackson Pollock, Robert Helpmann, Julia Gillard, Donald Trump and more.

In 1953, Stalin died in his bed. Found spinning on his record player was Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23, a recording of the often banned and exiled Russian pianist Maria Yudina. An outspoken champion of new music and artistic freedom, Yudina was famed for her vehement defiance of Stalin’s tyranny. While many of her fellow artists 'disappeared', or were purged by the KGB, Yudina outlasted Stalin and lived to tell her story.

Join the equally fearless and fierce pianist Sonya Lifschitz as she fires up Brisbane composer Robert Davidson’s electrifying new work, Stalin’s Piano. Conceived with and for the Ukranian-born virtuoso, this audio-visual treat weaves together dazzling piano music, the recorded voices of iconic figures, archival footage and Lifschitz’s spoken voice, taking us into the heart of ever-simmering conflicts.

By Robert Davison and Sonya Lifschitz.

Richard De Crespigny: FLY! Life Lessons From the Cockpit of QF32 (In Conversation)
Date Wed 19th Sep 2018
Presented by Brisbane Powerhouse.

In 2010, thousands of feet in the air above Singapore, the 469 passengers aboard QF32 found themselves in a crisis that no one could have anticipated when the A380 in which they were flying suffered a catastrophic explosion.

Captain Richard de Crespigny and his crew confronted extraordinary challenges over the next four hours, with only three partially working engines and a potentially explosive plane facing an imminent emergency landing. Even experienced crash-investigators later revealed they thought recovery in such circumstances was impossible. Yet in the end all aboard walked away safely.

Why was there a seemingly miraculous outcome to what could so easily have become an aviation disaster? And how did the captain and his crew remain so calm in such a stressful situation? The answer is leadership, teamwork and skill.

Join Captain Richard de Crespigny in this special conversation with ABC Radio’s Rhianna Patrick about his new book FLY! and hear him discuss insights and techniques he built up over decades in the high-pressure world of military and civilian aviation.

Richard will be signing books following the event.

Writers+Ideas is supported by O’Neill Architecture.

This is the first-ever circus setting of Rite of Spring. Under the direction of circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz and seen by over one million people in 39 countries, the Circa ensemble puts bodies on the line in electrifying explosions of physicality and power.

FourPlay String Quartet 'Wish' Single Launch Fortitude Valley
Date Sun 23rd Sep 2018
FourPlay put the ‘eclectic’ back into ‘electric string quartet’ with their second new single, ‘Wish’, a powerful, haunting ballad about living in a climate-changed world. As with previous release, ‘Bound’, the digital-only release of ‘Wish’ is now available and includes archival remixes of FourPlay songs. To celebrate the release the band will play east coast shows in Canberra, Melbourne, Nambour, Brunswick Heads and Sydney during September.

FourPlay, who have been wowing audiences around the world for over 20 years with both their radical reinventions of pop songs and their wildly eclectic original material, have often had environmental and political themes in their music.

‘Wish’ takes this to the next step: a haunting ballad with tones of Not Drowning Waving and 70s folk protest songs, with powerful lyrics delivered passionately by Tim Hollo and Lara Goodridge, intricate viola lines from Shenzo Gregorio, and a soaring, poignant cello solo from Peter Hollo.

‘Wish’ began life when the band was trapped behind rising floodwaters while enjoying the Bundanon Trust’s Artist-In-Residency program in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales.

Public Talk - Do You Know What Your True Purpose Is?
Date Fri 19th Oct 2018

We just keep going day in day out, following our routines and habits, attending to our families and children and work to provide for all that we accumulate. All of this keeps us so busy that we completely miss our purpose without even knowing it.

On a subtler level we are driven by our desire for success, power or recognition believing this is the purpose, or we try to maximise our comfort, safety, health and happiness with pleasure being our main goal. However, even if we achieve this temporarily, we can never be sure to have it forever.

In this Public Talk, drawing on the Dzogchen Teachings, Dzogchen Rinpoche will point out that by recognising and following the real purpose of our lives, we will not only lead a truly meaningful and valuable life, we can also rest in everlasting happiness.

Doors open at 7pm, the talk begins at 7.30pm.

Global Champagne Day
Date Sun 28th Oct 2018
Every year, The Champagne Dame creates a new show for Global Champagne Day! This year, Kyla will be showcasing Grand Marques Versus Grower—telling both sides of the story.

A ‘grand marque’ quite literally translates to a ‘big brand’ but in French the title for this group of Champagne houses has such an impressive and imposing sound and rightly so. Grand Marques are the biggest houses in champagne in terms of sales and the corresponding size of their brands.

Grower or ‘Recoltant’ in French is a producer that owns 95 per cent of the fruit they use for making champagne. Legally they can buy up to five per cent to supplement their production. Grower champagne accounts for just three per cent of champagne sold annually.

The Grand Marques however are not as 'Terroir-driven' as the smaller, growers of Champagne. It's not right or wrong, better or worse, it's just different. They will show you the difference over six champagnes—three grand marques and three growers who are instrumental in leading their respective sides of Champagne.

Price includes six champagnes and nibbles.

Passenger – Runaway Tour
Date Thu 15th Nov 2018
Following the release of single ‘Hell Or High Water’ and the announce of his tenth studio album 'Runaway', Passenger has announced his 2018 Australia and New Zealand tour dates. Along with this announcement, Passenger (aka Mike Rosenberg) has released a music video for the album’s title track, ‘Runaway’. The album has been largely recorded in Australia and will be dropped on Friday August 31 via Black Crow Records.

The British singer-songwriter will play a show in Auckland, as well as all major cities in Australia to showcase his forthcoming album. 'Runaway' finds Passenger embracing the epic once again—the melodies are unforgettable, the choruses colossal. Even though it was recorded between the UK and Australia with co-producer Chris Vallejo (INXS, Empire Of The Sun, Josh Pyke), the 10-track album was imagined as unfolding against a backdrop of American landscapes. And so, rather than following usual video process in studios or track-by-track, he and video director Jarrad Seng spent three weeks making videos across the US to capture the visual accompaniments to the aural landscapes.

Gary Óg
Date Fri 30th Nov 2018
After several sold out Australian shows in 2017, one of Europe’s finest folk and rebel artists makes his way back to Australia this year.

Gary Óg will once again look to take this country by storm after many highly successful Australia-wide tours through the years, which left audiences begging for more. Hailing from the Gorbals area in Glasgow, Scotland; Óg developed his craft growing up amongst an Irish community, which in past generations have immigrated to the area in the hope of a better life. “Many people, who were just off the boat from Ireland, settled in the Gorbals,” he said.

It was from these working class streets in Glasgow that he developed his penchant for Bob Dylan, Christy Moore and ballads of Irish freedom. He quickly started a band, Éire Og (meaning Young Ireland), which developed rapidly beyond his expectations and was soon immensely popular in Scotland, Ireland and most of Western Europe. Éire Og attracted impressive crowds, particularly in their ancestral homeland of Ireland—and it’s a place that Óg still loves to perform.

Nitro Circus You Got This Stadium Tour- Brisbane
Date Sat 23rd Feb 2019
After ushering in a new era in action sports last year with the FMX Next Level tour, Nitro Circus is ready to take progression to new heights once again, and in 2019 Australia is set to reap the rewards of this boundary-breaking insanity.

The Nitro Circus crew has created not one, but two all new ramps which will make their world debut on the YOU GOT THIS Stadium Tour.

These new ramps, one a radically expanded version of Nitro’s infamous Giganta Ramp along with a reimagined FMX setup, will be unveiled next February. Combined with the FMX Next Level ramp, this triple threat is literally too big for indoor arenas, and instead will take over Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

These will be one of the biggest shows in Nitro Circus history, as the best in FMX, BMX and Skate push themselves to their absolute limits on the biggest ramps in action sports. Adding to the fear factor, You Got This will feature a host of new crazy contraptions that have no business flying through the air, along with a few other surprises that will be revealed as the tour dates near.
