The Laura Folk Fair is an annual two-day festival held in the township of Laura, which is nestled on the eastern side of the lower Flinders Ranges. Laura is approximately 220 kilometres from Adelaide.
One of the main roads into Laura is closed off from all vehicular traffic and becomes a large mall lined with art, craft, hobby and food stalls. The art, craft and hobby stalls include lead lighting, pottery, fabric crafts of many sorts including patchwork, leather products including whip making, rustic crafts, clothing and many more. The food stalls include baked potatoes; barbecue, hotdogs, strawberries and ice cream, home cooked biscuits, pizza and Devonshire Teas. Of course there is the famous Golden North Ice cream and Laura is the home of Golden North.
There is also non-stop entertainment from three stage areas. This entertainment is suitable for all the family with special entertainment suitable for the young and the young at heart. There will be bands including pipe, concert and brass, folk groups, solo artists, magicians and you never know who you will meet wandering through the crowd, it may be Lucy Rabbit, Boris Bear or any other entertainer. There is ample seating for people to sit and listen and enjoy the entertainment. On Saturday evening there is a twilight Outdoor Bush Dance followed by a fireworks display, which lights up the township of Laura, weather permitting.
Fun competitions on Sunday include the great Golden North Ice-cream Eating Competition, which is open to juniors and seniors, and the Digby Carter Whip Cracking Competition. Both of these competitions are free to enter.
Over the Laura Folk Fair weekend the Rocky River Historic and Art Society hold their Laura Art Exhibition. The Showman's Guild of South Australia run side show alley and there are horse and trolley and camel rides available.
As the Laura Folk Fair is a street festival there is no admission charge and all the entertainment organised by the Laura Folk Fair Committee is free to the public. There is something available for the whole family during this festival.
