Featured on Maryborough's Walk and Drive Tour - this rendered brick building, the Former Australian Joint Stock Bank, was built in 1882 for the Maryborough Branch of the Australian Joint Stock Bank. The Union Bank occupied the building from 1906.

J E Brown commenced business as a provisions and victuals merchant in 1857 in Richmond Street. In 1879 J E Brown had this two-storey brick warehouse built and was designed by a local architect James Buchanan.

Featured on Maryborough's Walk and Drive Tour - Gatakers Building and the warehouse behind are the oldest surviving commercial buildings in Maryborough. Gatakers Building was built for Robert Travis in 1868, it and the warehouse located behind, became a warehouse for wine and spirit merchants, Graham and Gataker in 1885.

Boondooma Homestead represents a step back to 1847 when the Lawson brothers along with Robert Alexander established the Boondooma Station. The homestead and outbuildings are still in their original location and onsite caretakers are available to give you a guided tour.

Band Rotunda and Fairy Fountain

Brennan And Geraghtys Store Museum

Brennan and Geraghty's Store, with adjoining residence and cottage, was acquired by the National Trust of Queensland in 1975 due to its historical commercial significance. The large timber grocery store with masonry facade was operated by two generations of the same family for 101 years.

Excelsior Band Hall

Maryborough’s modern Excelsior Band Hall replaces the earlier hall destroyed by fire in 1987. It was designed in Victorian Style to compliment the precinct. The design choice also commemorates the length of time to which bands have added to the spirit and vitality of public occasions.

Former Queens Hotel

Featured on Maryborough's Walk and Drive Tour - The original Queens Hotel was destroyed in the 1876 fire, and was rebuilt a few years later. The Goodwin family opened the first hotel here in 1864.

Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens

The Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens was the site of Maryborough's second official cemetery, which closed in 1873. As the town expanded the cemetery was deemed a public health risk, and by 1907, moves were made to remove headstones and remains to the new cemetery.

The third official Maryborough cemetery was established in 1873 and burials were on a strictly denominational basis. The cemetery contains many fine examples of early Queensland monumental art. The Mortuary Chapel, was built 1883, and designed so horse drawn vehicles could pass through or shelter there.

Featured on Maryborough's Walk and Drive Tour - Maryborough State High School became amalgamated in 1974; prior to this it was a split school with Kent Street separating them. The former Boys Grammar School was built in 1881.

Maryborough City Hall

Designed by Brisbane architects Hall and Dods in American colonial style, Maryborough City Hall was erected in 1908 to replace the original timber Town Hall which stood on the opposite side of Kent Street.

264 Kent Street

This building at 264 Kent Street was erected in 1875 and was occupied by J H Bliss, a watchmaker and jeweller, who specialised in the supply and repair of maritime chronometers, barometers, sextants and navigational instruments. This business served the busy port of Maryborough during the 1880s.

Maheno Shipwreck

The Maheno, the most famous of the Fraser Island wrecks, was driven ashore just north of Happy Valley during a cyclone in 1935. Once a well-known trans-Tasman liner, the Maheno was bound for a Japanese wrecking yard when she met her stormy end.

Central State School

Featured on Maryborough's Walk and Drive Tour - The first building of Central State School is the Infants School which opened 1882. The single storey timber building originally had a shingle roof but this has been replaced with iron. However the lantern tower remains.

Maryborough Base Hospital

Featured on Maryborough's Walk and Drive Tour - the first public hospital outside Brisbane was established in Maryborough in 1856. This was replaced by a two storey building in Lennox Street in 1864. The present hospital was opened in May 1887 at a cost of £13,000.

Former Flour Mill

The Maryborough Flour Mill was the most northerly flour mill in Australia when it was built in 1890, for the Maryborough Milling Company. In 1919, the Dominion Flour Milling Company who now owned the mill bought the remaining relic of Aldershot smelting works, the chimney.

Maryborough Post Office

The Maryborough Post Office opened in 1866 and is the oldest surviving masonry Post Office in Queensland. In those early days, attached to the top of the tower, was a wooden pole holding a Time Ball which was lowered each day at 1.00 p.m.

Mr George Galbraith was the proprietor of Maryborough's Custom House Hotel when it was built in 1868. 1883 saw the Customs House extended. Its past elegance reflects the rapid growth of the port at the time of the 1867 Gympie gold rush.

Bunya Mountains National Park

Bunya Mountains National Park, Queensland’s second-oldest national park, protects the world’s largest remaining bunya pine rainforest. Until the late 1800s, Aboriginal people travelled here from far distant places for bunya nut festivals. Mary Ann Steam Engine

The Mary Ann is a replica of the first steam engine built in Queensland in 1873 at John Walker and Co's Union Foundry. It steams through the park along the rail tracks which were laid to service the wharves and Walker's Foundry.

Engineers Arms

The current Engineer’s Arms building was built in 1889, by Mrs Dillane to replace the original 1870 building. The former hotel was designed to fit the wedge-shaped block. It is reminiscent of early pubs in Sydney associated with the waterfront.

Criterion Hotel


Maryborough

The Prince of Wales, a single storey boarding house, first occupied this site. This was licensed as the Melbourne Hotel in 1864 but was destroyed by fire in 1878. A two story building was rebuilt here and the third story was added in 1882.

Maryborough Heritage Centre

Maryborough Heritage Centre was built for the Bank of New South Wales in 1878. Iron columns support the verandahs which are decorated with fine iron lace balustrades upstairs and wrought iron on the lower level.

Autumn Park

Autumn Park is situated on the corner of Drayton and Cairns Street, Nanango, and is the most recently built recreational park in Nanango. The Nanango Shire Council established it in February/March 1997 on the site of the old saleyard. The first stockyards built belonged to Jacob Goode.

Former Royal Bank of Queensland

The Royal Bank of Queensland opened its Maryborough branch in 1888 in this Kent Street building known as Windsor House. In 1922 the Royal Bank of Queensland merged with the Queensland National Bank.

Charlcombe

Featured on Maryborough's Walk and Drive Tour - Charlcombe was built for Stewart Corser in 1917 and originally had a tiled roof which had to be replaced following a hail-storm in 1966. This house contrasts with the workers cottage next door.

Ellena Street Pavement Art and Sculpture


Maryborough

Primary School students designed the pavers for the Ellena Street Pavement Art and Sculpture, with the theme being "I can find it in Maryborough". Maryborough-born artist Susie Hansen designed the large sculpture in the street as a tribute to Maryborough industry.

Bauer and Wiles Memorial Fountain

Australia's only outbreak of the pneumonic plague was in Maryborough in 1905. This fountain, situated to the Lennox Street side of City Hall, is a memorial to the two Nurses Cecilia Bauer and Rose Wiles who courageously volunteered to nurse victims of the plague.

Maryborough Sugar Factory Pty Ltd

Featured on the Maryborough Heritage City Walk and Drive Tour - the first Maryborough sugar to be manufactured was in 1864 when John Buhot demonstrated sugar making using cane grown from John Eatons plantation Rose Hill Estate.

Former Hotel Francis

Featured on Maryborough's Walk and Drive Tour - Former Hotel Francis is the site of the first hotel built in the new Maryborough Township in 1853, the Maryborough Inn. The current building, erected as a single storey in 1878, is the third hotel to occupy this site.

Maryborough Freemasons Centre

Freemasonry was first established in Maryborough in 1870, sponsored by the Irish Union Concert Constitution, with meetings being held in the old Baptist Chapel in Lennox Street. The first freemason temple was built in 1877 in Bazaar Street and the present building located in Kent Street was completed in 1960.
