The Coopers Kangaroo Island Cup Carnival is not only one of the State's premier regional racing events but also Kangaroo Island's iconic event. With around 4,300 people living on Kangaroo Island, the Island almost doubles in population over the racing carnival weekend, with visitors, trainers and jockeys coming from far and wide. Horses are entered from the stables of such celebrities as Wolf Blass and David Hayes. The racing has provided a growth in supporting events such as the Bowls day held at the Kingscote Bowling Club and the Main Street Carnival held on the Friday of the race week. You can also take part in the 'Golf Day' at the Kingscote Golf Club on the Sunday following the races. The event draws crowds from the Island but more particularly from Adelaide and regional South Australia, together with a continuing growth of numbers from Melbourne and regional Victoria. Overseas visitors who are on the Island during the event invariably attend. Spectators come to enjoy the festive week and take part in the Island's very generous hospitality. The week begins on Wednesday with a reception at the Ozone Seafront Hotel; it is a wonderful night when owners, trainers, members of the club and guests come together for a social gathering sampling some of Kangaroo Island's food delights. The next day, Thursday, is the first day of racing at the Kangaroo Island Racecourse just outside Kingscote at Cygnet River. The racecourse is transformed with marquees and colourful signs and flags displayed by the many sponsors. The program includes six races. It is great to be trackside and enjoy a very special programme of racing. And of course there is the Cray Fish Picking Competition, which entertains the crowd between the races. On Friday there is a Street Carnival in Kingscote, hosted by MIX 102.3. The Street party also features music supplied by Adelaide bands. The Kangaroo Island Racing Club Calcutta is run on the Kangaroo Island cup, which takes place in the Ozone Hotel Marquee at 8.30pm. Racing continues on Saturday at the Kangaroo Island Racecourse, featuring another six sponsorship races, together with holiday auctions, 'Fashions on the Field', winner's presentations, along with the usual race proceedings. There are many fine foods available on the course ranging from Kangaroo Island seafood and free-range chicken to barbecue meats, as well as hot dogs, ice creams and doughnuts. On Saturday evening hotels, along with restaurants and cafes are full with diners, revellers, with people partying well into the early hours. Sunday is the recovery day with most visitors staying on the Island for added days to sightsee. |
