Tangaratta Vineyards, in the Peel Valley, now has 30 hectares planted here, producing 300 tonne annually, with the varieties being Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Verdelho.
The excellent soil structure, suitable climate and availability of water makes the area best suited to red wines. Tangaratta’s first vintages, released in 2001, were Merlot and Verdelho.
While Tangaratta produces wines under its own label, it is also part of a six-member vineyard group, Penmara Wines. The other members in this group are situated in the Hunter Valley.
Now the property is pristine, with the original Strathaven Homestead, built in the early 20th century, used as a function centre - particularly for weddings, and as a tasting centre for the regular weekend visitors.
