The Flinders Discovery Centre in Hughenden houses a skeletal life-size replica of the Muttaburrasaurus Langdoni, a dinosaur fossil display including local fossils, and gemstones and fossils from around the world. Other displays include the Porcupine Gorge Light and Sound Show, telling the story of the formation of the gorge over 500 million years, a bioregion exhibition, historical memorabilia and an audiovisual presentation on the development of Hughenden with early settlers. New to the centre is ‘Shearing the Stragglers’, reminiscing the demise of the shearing industry in the Flinders Shire. Made from a shearing shed over 100 years old, audio stories tell of the first settlement through to the continual change and current state of the industry. The centre boasts an excellent kids area with dinosaur costumes, puzzles and books to keep the kids thoroughly entertained. The Centre is also the accredited information centre for Hughenden and has a large selection of visitor information on local, regional and interstate attractions. An excellent souvenir shop boasts some wonderful mementos of Hughenden and district. |
