The Carrathool Races are the epitome of the 'bush race' meeting. The race meeting is organised by the Carrathool Jockey Club when the small town of 99 friendly souls, bursts at the seams with over 2,500 excited race lovers and larrikins ready for the race meeting.Facilities for the day include a continuous barbeque, publican’s booth, refreshments, a bus shuttle service from town to the track and a free jumping castle for kids.
Fashions on the field are a feature for ladies and gentlemen, as well as the Jillaroo's sprint and Jackaroos dash, which always musters a great crowd. The Jillaroos and Jackaroos race is a hotly contested foot race, through the dirt and dust that leaves the participants exhilarated and the cheer squads hoarse with delight. There are also great prizes to be won.
The famous bough sheds are aptly covered in gun leaves and shade cloth to shelter those from the sweltering heat, but sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and stubby holder are essential accessory items. The day is usually warm, but you can also experience a dust storm, rain and flies. A real Aussie experience!
After the last race the activity continues well into the night, with patrons heading back into the township of Carrathool to the local pub for a night of hearty outback entertainment. Thousands of people throw down their swags under the wide starry skies to end an exhausting but great day. People travel from interstate for this famous outback event the "Carrathool Bough Shed Races".
