Montague Island is an amazing place, just 9 kilometres offshore from Narooma. The only way to go ashore is on a Montague Island Tour with a National Parks and Wildlife Service guide. Once ashore you will explore the history of the island, including its Aboriginal heritage as well as its remarkable plants and wildlife. Dive charters operate out to the island to explore its unique underwater features and other adventure cruise tours will show you around the shoreline and perhaps combine snorkelling or fishing with close encounters with the wildlife. There are always seals on some of the rocky points on the island, but their population swells to over 1000 during late winter and spring and large pods of dolphins may gather and play around the tour vessel. Little penguins may be encountered (in season) during the evening Montague Island tour, where you may be lucky enough to see a few land at the viewing area. In the springtime, humpback whales move south on their annual migration from the warmer tropical waters to the cooler waters of the Antarctic. Morning and evening, guided 3-4 hour tours are available regularly year-round, subject to weather and minimum numbers. Morning tours - explore the island’s rich environment, unique wildlife and fascinating history. Evening tours - (available only in season) explore the island and also feature viewing of Little Penguins as they come ashore ashore at dusk. In season (spring), all tours feature whale-watching during the annual southern humpback migration. School Tours and Special Tours available at times to suit your needs. For bookings contact the Narooma Visitor Centre. Tours are subject to passenger numbers, weather and sea conditions.
