Vicki Varvaressos, Painting in the Same Language - A Different Vocabulary
Date Sat 13th Oct 2018 to Sat 1st Dec 2018

After 20 years as a renowned figurative artist, her style eased its way into abstraction and since then Vicki continues to work in both styles, with some paintings seemingly transitioning in-between. For the Sydney-based painter, abstraction is just a different painting vocabulary. “It’s the same language”.

Featuring paintings from 1977 to 2017, this survey exhibition, curated by Max Dingle, investigates Varvaressos’ development over time and the slippage between the two styles.

The Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award
Date Fri 26th Oct 2018 to Sat 8th Dec 2018
One of Australia's most loved and richest portrait awards, the biennial Shirley Hannan National Portrait Award celebrates realistic portraiture in memory of the Gallery's eponymous patron.

Hannan, a gifted portraitist, was well known in the Bega Valley as a staunch supporter and generous patron of the arts, funded the John Balmain National Award for Portraits and Figure Drawing from 1993 until she re-established it in her own name in 2002 with a substantially increased first prize of AUD15,000.

A prerequisite for the award was made that those works selected to hang depict their subjects accurately without abstraction and demonstrate a sound skill and knowledge of drawing and painting technique. The award was established with a specific and unremitting realist bent, which continues to this day.

Before her death in 2005, Hannan doubled the prize purse to AUD30,000 and it was decided to discard the figure drawing component of the prize, concentrating on portraiture alone.

In 2012, Hannan's son Peter, himself a talented photographer, paid further tribute to his mother's memory with a generous personal donation of an additional AUD20,000 bringing the prize purse for subsequent awards to AUD50,000.

Good with Maps
Date Tue 30th Oct 2018
When the world map was full of gaps, the Amazon topped the list of places unknown to western explorers. In 2017 are there any ‘unknowns’ left? On a trip to the Amazon, the writer ponders this and other questions as she struggles to deal with her father’s journey through Parkinson’s disease towards what is perhaps our last great unknown.

Good With Maps is sometimes sad and confronting but also funny and thoughtful and celebrates the power of reading and literature to transport us to places both real and imagined.

Noëlle’s unfailing ability to ignite universal emotions and laughter in all of us while gloriously revealing her own exquisite uniqueness is one of this piece’s great joys.

Presented by the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre and South East Arts.

Adrenaline-pumping, full-contact theatre at its best.

Join them ringside for a rare theatrical combo: engrossing storytelling paired with the visceral thrill and energy of boxing.

Isa is a young Congolese boxer blazing an impressive career between the ropes. Gearing up for the national title fight, he soon discovers it’s not just his opponents he has to outdo, but the demons from his tortuous past as a boy soldier.

Fleeing the Congo as a child, playwright Future D. Fidel lived in a Tanzanian refugee camp for eight years before being granted refugee status in Australia. Written with the undeniable force of authenticity, Prize Fighter is inspired by his own story and those of the people he has known.

Nominated for four Helpmann Awards, this is skillfully realised theatre, full of complexity, energy and surprising delicacy. It’s an experience that’s not to be missed.

With its tales of Britain’s fortunes past and present, of ancient Viking battles, of Shakespeare’s contribution to comedy, and Bill’s own ancestry, this is both a mockery and a celebration of national identity.

Guy Warren, 'River, Rainforest, Rock'
Date Sat 8th Dec 2018 to Sat 9th Feb 2019
For Guy Warren personal experience and memory are vitally important, intertwining with subject matter across his works. Certain events and places had such strong impact that they appear constantly throughout the paintings, prints and drawings Warren has produced over the past six decades.

A canoeing trip down the Shoalhaven River Warren undertook in 1939, at the age of sixteen, and a block of land at the head of the Jamberoo valley on which Warren built a shed have both been integral to his practice. Images of the river, canoe and the ‘hut on the hill,’ all imbued with memories and fantasies, are a strong presence throughout his works and the complex overlapping of form found within the rainforest has impacted depth and patterning across his entire oeuvre.

Date Fri 20th Sep 2019 to Sat 21st Sep 2019
The Sapphire Coast Orchid Club Spring Orchid Show will be held in the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre in Zingel Place Bega.

The Spring Orchid Show at Bega is an annual event on the Sapphire Coast and follows the Winter Orchid Show in Merimbula. The Gulaga Foyer is the perfect room to show Orchids at their best. The well lit and open glassed room makes this a spectacular event.

Whilst this show has a strong Cymbidium class it is becoming to be a showplace for Australian Native orchids with many top class plants on display. These are well supported by a large variety of other exotic orchids that are in flower at this time of the year.

Entry is free and there is a sales table where club members sell plants excess to their needs. It's a great place to pick up quality plants at very reasonable cost but be early. For more information go to the website.
