The Gospel According to Paul
Date Tue 26th Feb 2019 to Sat 2nd Mar 2019
By Jonathan Biggins

One of Australia’s favourite performers, Jonathan Biggins, is Paul Keating – visionary, reformer and rabble-rouser.

Beyond the canny impersonation (made famous through his annual turns in The Wharf Revue), Biggins, like so many Australians, has long been fascinated by Keating and what Keating means to Australia.

Showcasing the eviscerating wit, rich rhetoric and ego the size of Everest, he now distils Keating’s essence into this stunning new play, focussing on key biographical milestones, landmark political achievements and personal obsessions. It reveals the man who grew up in the tribe of the Labor Party and gained an education at the knee of Jack Lang, who treated economics as an artform, and demanded we confront the wrongs of our colonial past.

Full of intelligence and humour, this is a funny, insightful and occasionally poignant portrait of Paul Keating – the man that, as he tells it, single-handedly shaped contemporary Australia.

Seven Little Australians
Date Sun 14th Apr 2019
Script and lyrics by John Palmer and Peter Yeldham
Music by David Reeves.

When it premiered in 1988-89, David Reeve’s Seven Little Australians immediately became Australia’s first major homegrown musical theatre success at the box office.

Based on Ethel Turner’s classic tale of the same name and taken to heart by young and old since 1894, it is the story of a few months in the life of the Woolcot family. Laugh, and cry! And the music will stay with you long after you leave the theatre!

Captain Woolcot, a widower, has remarried, and his new wife is a young and beautiful girl, not much older than his eldest daughter. She quickly provides a seventh mouth to feed.

The Seven will captivate you, and with them (whether on the stage or in the audience) you’ll share the trials and triumphs of this colonial family, as brash, forthright and enchanting as old Sydney Town itself. And it’s as relevant today as it was when it first took the market by storm over one hundred years ago!

What will the Captain do to reign in his free-spirited daughter? Such an influence on the other children!

Barbara and the Camp Dogs
Date Wed 5th Jun 2019 to Sat 8th Jun 2019
By Ursula Yovich and Alana Valentine.

Barbara fronts a pub rock band, captivating crowds with her cutting wit and unrepentant sexuality. She may be fun, she may be dangerous, and she may be speeding headlong towards a dead end.

When her sister (and fellow muso) René hears that Mum is sick, they set out on a long and winding motorbike adventure from Sydney, through Darwin, and finally to Katherine – where the pair come face to face with some home truths.

Ursula Yovich (Diving for Pearls) is a force of nature at her remarkable best. The singer, actor, writer and modern songwoman is joined by Elaine Crombie (star of ABC TV’s Black Comedy and Rosehaven) in this fiercely entertaining, critically acclaimed play that is part madcap buddy comedy, part electrifying rock gig, and part clarion call against the taint of inequality.

Co-authored by prolific playwright Alana Valentine (Dead Man Brake, Letters to Lindy), this effervescent play with songs sold out its original season at Belvoir, and will charm the pants off Wollongong.

After intoxicating sold-out audiences across the country, The Wine Bluffs are here to do what they do best: talk about wine. Laying spurious claim to a reputation as renowned wine consultants, the duo, fresh from judging the Fruit Wine Section at The Rockhampton Show, will take you through the cellar door experience with a comedic twist.

They’ll help you match wine to Chiko Rolls, translate over-written bottle blurbs and identify the biggest Wine Wanker in the room: if you have a wine fridge set on two temperatures… it’s probably you.

The union of Callinan (Melbourne Fringe Comedy winner and three-time Barry Award Nominee) and Calleja (stand up and writer on Before The Game and countless other television shows) has everyone’s palate salivating as they prepare to uncork their latest vintage and let the comedy breathe.

Book by Enda Walsh , Music and lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová.

Set in modern day Dublin, Once is a tender love story of a struggling Irish musician on the verge of giving up, and a piano-playing Czech immigrant who reminds him how to dream. This exhilarating musical is performed by an extraordinary ensemble of actor-musicians. With songs from the critically-acclaimed film, including the Oscar-winning Falling Slowly, this achingly beautiful, joyously uplifting show strikes an unforgettable chord, speaking to the power of music to connect us all.

A show like this only comes around Once.

A vivid portrait of a world far removed from the showbiz glitz of Riverdance, this award-winning work is a charming reminder that there’s more to life than learning the right steps.

With a large birthmark across her face, we discover that Heidi is the disfigured daughter of Hitler. Caught in the turmoil of war, she is hidden away by her father, one of the most dreaded men in history.

Back at the bus shelter, Mark becomes so engrossed in Anna’s story; he begins to wonder how it would feel to be the child of someone as evil as Hitler. As the play evolves, Mark’s search for truth in a world of half-truths becomes clearer and the story culminates in the bombing of Berlin, the fall of the Third Reich and the end of Heidi’s innocence.

A View from the Bridge
Date Wed 28th Aug 2019 to Sat 31st Aug 2019
By Arthur Miller.

Following its smash-hit, sold out season at Sydney’s Old Fitz Theatre, this award-winning, critically acclaimed production lands on their stage. Director Iain Sinclair’s 2017 production swept the Sydney Theatre Awards and was universally praised for its raw power and breathtaking performances.

1950s Italian-American immigrant life colours this searing drama of love and revenge set in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Arthur Miller’s tragic masterpiece confronts the American dream in a stripped-back, muscular drama that simmers with tension and explodes with passion. It might be 1950s Brooklyn, but the themes of family, loyalty, immigration and justice are as relevant for contemporary Australia as ever before.

Picasso and His Dog
Date Tue 3rd Sep 2019 to Wed 4th Sep 2019
One fine spring morning in 1957, Lump arrived for lunch. Lump was an elongated sausage dog with floppy ears and an inquisitive nature. He looked around at Picasso’s villa and then into the deep, brown eyes of the man himself and decided he was home. From this first meeting, a deep love was forged between Picasso and Lump. He was also an inspiration for Picasso, appearing in fifty-four of the artist’s works. Lump lived with Picasso for 16 years. In a perfect ending, perhaps not content with life on earth without each other, both died in the same year.

Inspired by this true story, Picasso and His Dog is a delightful show that celebrates the animals with whom we share our lives while exploring what it is to be creative and to create.

This work is a unique children’s puppet play that combines the art and story of Picasso with the extraordinary poems of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda and the text of Picasso’s contemporary and lifelong friend, Gertrude Stein. It is a refreshingly original work, wild and adventurous.

A night at the theatre goes spectacularly wrong for dashing adventurer Richard Hannay. Pulled into a web of intrigue and deceit, he must evade shadowy organisations, femme fatales, corrupt constables and frisky farmers’ wives to solve the mystery of the 39 Steps and save the motherland.

Equal parts farce, clowning masterclass, stage wizardry and heart-stopping noir, this thrilling laugh-a-minute wartime conspiracy features four incredible actors performing 139 roles in 100 minutes.

With a knowing wink to the audience, this is Hitchcock at top speed.
