The Northern Territory is rich in mineral resources, the production of which is worth about AUD1.4 billion annually.
Alcan's bauxite and alumina processing operation on the Gove Peninsula in north east Arnhem Land, accounts for about 32 percent of the value of the Territory's mineral production, followed closely by gold. This is the third largest bauxite mine in Australia, producing more than 6 million tonnes of bauxite per year and more than 1.8 million tonnes of alumina. Annual production is valued at AUD605 million and the mine has a projected life of more than 30 years.

Alcan advise that as this is a working mine, visitors must wear closed in footwear and full length sleeves. No video or camera gear is allowed in the refinery area, however photography is permitted in all other areas. Children must be at least ten years of age to undertake this tour.
