Established in 1938, Toowoomba has the oldest public art gallery in regional Queensland.

The new Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery was opened on the 19th of March 1994 and is owned and maintained by the Toowoomba City Council. The Gallery is the permanent home to the Lionel Lindsay Art Gallery and Library.

Assembled by Toowoomba resident, the late Mr William Bolton MBE, this collection features over 400 significant Australian art works by such artists as Lionel, Norman, Percy, Daryl and Ruby Lindsay, Phillips Fox, McCubbin and more.

The Library is of outstanding historical and national significance and comprises rare books and manuscripts.

Examples include letters written by explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, navigator La Perouse, literary figures such as Henry Lawson and Lionel Lindsay's collection of papers. The Fred and Lucy Gould art collection also features in the gallery, consisting of antique furniture, fine porcelain and glassware, gold and silverware, bronzes, carved ivory pieces and other items mostly from Europe, Asia and Australia.

The works date from the early 1700s to the 1930s. The City Collection focuses on twentieth century Australian paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, ceramics, small scale sculpture and jewellery with an emphasis on works by regional artists with regional themes. The Gallery has an extensive program of approximately 45 exhibitions annually.

Contemporary exhibitions change monthly, while historical exhibitions, drawn from the Collections change three times a year. The Gallery aims to provide diversity of educational activities to complement the exhibition program.

Events such as lectures, public forums, workshops, demonstrations, floor talks and guided tours are presented. The Gallery Shop offers a variety of interesting gifts and the work of regional and interstate artists.
