Welcome wine lovers, to Open Cellars of Nillumbik - just 30 minutes drive northeast from Melbourne. You can visit boutique cellars that are not always open to the public. Try handcrafted wines that are not always offered by the glass. Meet local winemakers, and enjoy a day of art, music and food. Is there something different about the wines of Nillumbik? The cellar doors you might visit vary from contemporary design to buildings constructed from local stone and mud. Exhibits from new and award winning local artists are also on display at many of the cellar doors. From a viticultural perspective, Nillumbik is classed as part of the Yarra Valley, but it is good to note why the wines taste so different. This difference can be explained by the soil and environment.... by the 'terroir'. Nillumbik covers the valley of the Diamond Creek, a tributary of the Yarra River. As you travel around the beautiful region take note of the windswept black volcanic hill tops of Kangaroo Ground, through the fine soils of Arthurs Creek/Yan Yean to the daunting clay gravels of Panton Hill and St.Andrews. Generally the wines are typical of a cool climate region, crisp and clean, but with an intensity that is unique. But come out and taste our wines, meet our winemakers and hear from them what makes their wines so special. Come and enjoy a meet the maker experience as you gain an appreciation of the winemaking process, try and buy if you like, enjoy complementing foods (all available at a reasonable price) and enjoy live entertainment at some of the venues. The wineries are close to each other and travel distances are easy and picturesque. Whichever winery you visit you'll be assured of a warm welcome in this beautiful part of Victoria.
